Nationally recognized workplace wellness expert Ron Z. Goetzel will head a list of speakers scheduled to participate in the Workplace Wellness Symposium, scheduled for June 8 near Baltimore.

Goetzel, director of Emory University’s Institute for Health and Productivity Studies and vice president of consulting and applied research at Thomson Reuters Goetzel, is an expert on how workplace wellness programs can lead to improved employee productivity and health cost savings. He is the principal investigator for wellness programs administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Centers for Disease Control, Prevention and some of the nation’s largest employers.
Organizers say the event is designed to provide agents and brokers with information on how the new health care reform legislation will affect employers, what health issues are adversely affecting workers’ compensation injury/illness claims, and information on the legal environment regarding workplace wellness.
Speakers also plan to discuss how a healthy workforce bolsters Maryland’s economic vitality and workplace wellness success stories.
Other speakers include Maryland Health Secretary John M. Colmers; Richard Safeer, director of prevention and disease management at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield; Tim Michels, executive vice president of claims for Towson, Md.-based IWIF Workers’ Compensation Insurance; and Don Walsh, a principal at the Offitt Kurman law firm.
The event, which is free, runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Westin BWI Hotel near BWI/Thurgood Marshall Airport. Sponsors include IWIF Workers’ Compensation Insurance, CareFirst and the Chesapeake Region Safety Council.
